Bannan had warned Jenny not to come here. What had he said? He didn’t have any power down here? She wondered briefly where he did have power. And what exactly that power might be.

A path just like the one they had been walking on before slinked up from the shore to the castle door. Squat bushes flanked either side of the path, and twinkling silver lights draped over them. The sky was full of stars, and fireflies wove lazily through the air around them. Jenny could hear music coming from inside the castle. It was all incredibly … romantic. Sadie yanked on her arm again, pulling her out of her thoughts and down the path. They walked quickly in a crouching position, trying to keep low and out of sight of whatever it was they were going to save Hannah from. They followed Hannah’s bloody footprints, though they would have known where she had gone without them—the path only led one place. When they approached the castle, they dropped to their knees and crept toward the large light-filled windows. Slowly, they peeked into the castle, with only their eyes and the tops of their heads visible.

The room was beautiful. Sparkling chandeliers dipped down from the ceiling, servants in pressed black-and-white uniforms glided through the crowd with trays of shimmering champagne glasses. The partygoers themselves were stunning. The men were in fancy suits, and the women were in long, flowing gowns in every color from lavender to black. Jenny watched the women closely, focusing on their faces, looking for Hannah.

She noticed that despite the bright colors, sparkling lights, and party atmosphere, the women all looked miserable. Some had tears streaming down their faces. Others had a dead stare and were lifelessly letting themselves be spun across the dance floor. Jenny watched them, horrified.

“There,” Sadie said, nudging her. “Hannah.”

Jenny looked where Sadie was gesturing and saw her; she looked beautiful. Instead of the pink cupcake pajamas she had been wearing, she was now in a long gown of emerald green. It shimmered and sparkled as she moved, and her hair was swept into an elaborate updo. She wasn’t smiling, though. She looked exhausted. A tall man in a crisp tuxedo whisked her across the dance floor.

“Come on,” Sadie said, standing up from her crouching position. “We’re going in there.”

“What? No, no we have to think about this. We can’t just go in there with no plan.”

“I don’t know how much time we have to save her. We can’t waste it just sitting here,” Sadie snapped.

“Yeah, I get that, but we don’t know what will happen if we go in there! We need to—”

“Fine, you stay here and be plan B. I’m going in,” Sadie hissed as she got up and ran to the door.

“Wait!” Jenny whispered harshly at her, still in her crouched position. Sadie’s recklessness was going to get them in real trouble. Jenny stayed at the window and watched as Sadie’s petite frame paused momentarily at the large doors, then disappeared between them.
